Manners Movement in France

Are you polite to people in the service industry? You know who I'm talking about: the people who pour your coffees and cocoas, make your burgers, open the dressing rooms, and bag your groceries (just to name a few)! A little courtesy and a friendly attitude can go a long way just about anywhere, but especially in France.  Check out this article.

So, what do you think? Leave comments below!

Fun Activities for World Language Students at SDMS!

Students and parents, take note of the following activities that are coming up!

Thursday, December 18 - 2:20-3:15

Snowman workshop

On Thursday we will be making cute little sledding snowman! They are fun to make and are a great ornament or fun winter decoration.

There are only 18 snowmen, so be sure to sign-up during class this week.

The workshop is FREE.  All you need to bring is a bottle of glue (if you can)!

Tuesday and Wednesday, January 15 and 16 - 2:20-3:15

French movie afternoon

Come for a movie and a popcorn snack in Ms. Pinette's room.  We will watch a French movie, in French with English subtitles.  So that more kids can come, we will watch half the movie on Wednesday and finish it on Thursday.  This way, students can take the late bus home.

Happy Thanksgiving

Whether you call it Le Jour de l'Action de Grâce, el Día de Acción de Gracias, or simply Thanksgiving, there is a lot to be thankful for even when things aren't going 100% right.

Does anyone know why we eat turkey on Thanksgiving? Hmm... let's ask a couple of turkeys!

Turkey Number 1: French

Turkey Number 2: Spanish

I couldn't understand anything those turkeys were saying! American turkeys say "Gobble! Gobble!" What do French and Spanish turkeys say?

Never Give Up!

Sometimes learning another language can be hard.  School in general can be hard, am I right?! Often, the difference between those who are successful and those who are not is their determination and perseverance.

If you feel overwhelmed or down on yourself, don't give up! Get some help from a friend or teacher and take it one day at a time.  Keep giving your best effort and one day, you'll see progress and you'll understand why you have been working so hard.

Or just watch this video and be inspired!

Language Evolution

Do you ever make up words in English? When a word catches on, sometimes it is adapted as a word in the language.  It takes many years and it's a slow process, but when this happens over and over again, a language evolves!

Language is a living organism that changes to adapt to its speakers' needs. Languages that do not adapt can sometimes die because they are no longer useful!

What new words have you noticed recently? Do you like them or do you wish they would go out of style?
Have you ever invented a word in English? How about in Spanish or French?
